Highland Park Pre-school
discontinued for 2010-11
Our school enrollment has continued to increase.
Due to this increase in students, we have found it necessary to
use the preschool classroom as part of our regular education program.
We will miss Jeanette Ricci, her assistant Lisa Dunsmore, their
great program, and those darling little pre-school children.
Beacon Heights, the closest available pre-school,
will hold enrollment Friday, March 12 between 1:00-4:00 p.m. For
locations of other tuition-based, pre-school programs, contact
Annabelle Valencia, 801-578-8287, at the Salt Lake School District
Early Childhood Department. She looks forward to your call and
will be most helpful.
Thanks Jeanette Ricci and
Lisa Dunsmore! You are great!

March 14, 2010 – Switch to Daylight
Saving Time
The federal law that established "daylight time" in the United
States does not require any area to observe daylight saving time. But
if a state chooses to observe DST, it must follow the starting and ending
dates set by the law. From 1986 to 2006 this was the first Sunday in
April to the last Sunday in October, but starting in 2007, it is observed
from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, adding
about a month to daylight saving time.

Please help!
Three things we can all do to help keep our school a safe and
pleasant place to learn:
1) Remember to sign in at the front office when entering the
school as a visitor or volunteer. The sign-in sheets are located
just outside of the main office.
2) Be particularly cautious near crosswalks.
3) Please clean up after your dog and encourage others to do the
same. Dog waste continues to be found on our school lawns.
By signing in at the office, you are recognized as an authorized
visitor or volunteer. At the same time, you can record your volunteer
time. This is recorded and reported to the Board of Education,
SL School District, and the State PTA. Volunteer hours are used
to solidify funding and validate programs.
The crosswalk on Melbourne Avenue is our current focus for safety.
There is a city ordinance which prohibits parking a car within
20 feet of a crosswalk. The reasoning behind this is simple. Children
especially younger, shorter children cannot be seen by oncoming
traffic if cars are parked near a crosswalk. Please do not park
your car near a crosswalk even if you are remaining in your vehicle.
Do not use the area near the crosswalk as a drop off or pick up
zone. Melbourne is a narrow street; please use thoughtful judgment
when navigating around cars and children.
The same precautions need to continually be observed at the front
of the school. More often than not, our students are excited and
distracted when exiting the school; they are not always alert
to vehicles and crossing guards, so please keep an eye out. No
vehicles should be parked or idling west of the crosswalk to the
wheelchair ramp located in front of the school. Thank you for
your patience with the buses and our safety patrol.
The field behind Highland Park is not a dog park. During school
hours, no one outside of students, teachers, and authorized volunteers
should be on our school’s grounds. This includes neighbors
playing with their pets. Dog waste can carry disease and is a
nuisance.
Please clean up after your pet and encourage others to do the
same.

Pennies for Haiti from the
Second Grade
The Highland Park second graders raised $149.00 for Haiti Relief
last month by donating all their pennies! That makes 10,490 pennies!
The money was sent to UNICEF. Way to go second grade!

Next PTA meeting will be Thursday, March 18th at 7 p.m. All are

grants and Field Trip funds. |

Spring, Almost
The sunshine gleams so bright and warm,
The sky is blue and clear.
I run outdoors without a coat,
And spring is almost here.
Then before I know it,
Small clouds have blown together,
The sun just can't get through them,
And again, it's mitten weather!

Get Ready For Art Night
2010!
Remember to circle FRIDAY, APRIL 16th on your
calendar for the 5th Annual Highland Park Art Night! You may have already
started getting notes about the different ways you can help make our
5th Annual Art Night successful. For instance, each class will be donating
items for our Theme Basket Raffle, and notes will be coming home from
each class to let you know what the theme is.
We will also be soliciting donations for the Silent Auction, which is
always a big hit. Your child’s class may also be chosen to design
one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted bracelets, and this year they will be able
to make matching earrings, which are fabulous gifts for moms, grandmas,
aunts and anyone special in your child’s life. Your child will
also be participating with his or her class in creating a unique and
fabulous art project which will be included as part of the Silent Auction
items.
On Art Night, there will also be displays
of art and informances, a children’s area, food, fun and lots
and lots of ways to spend your money to help the Arts at Highland Park.
The Project 337 Art Truck will be at the school for children and families
to explore the installation art of local Utah artists. Live artists
will be creating art for auction, as well as selling their artwork.
Hands-on art experiences will be available all during the evening to
help remind us why the arts are such a wonderful and valuable part of
our children’s education. Child care will be available. This is
the primary fund-raiser from the community to support the visual art,
vocal music and dance programs at Highland Park, and it’s something
we look forward to all year. Get excited!

A note about the Silent
Auction at Art Night
It's time to start getting the buzz going about Arts Night!!!
"It's time once again to start thinking of the Arts Celebration
Night! It was a BIG success last year, and we are hoping for an
even better event this year. Thank you for all that you do to
support our school, and programs for our children. The silent
auction is a big part of Arts Night. If you have anything you'd
like to donate, (or know someone who does), then we would love
to hear from you. We have already got some great things lined
up, and we're very excited! If you would like to donate, please
contact Cheryl Sharp (801-474-1427), Jamie Anderson (801-474-1252),
Sue Hardy (801-485-5943), or Loralee Miner (801-484-2089). There
will be a box in the office, also if you have something you'd
just like to drop off. We would love to have all items in by April
1st. Thank you again for your support!" ~ Loralee Miner

A note about the Classroom Basket
Raffle
at Art Night
One of the most exciting parts of Art Night is the Classroom
Theme Basket Raffle! Last year the Basket Raffle brought in over $5,500
for Highland Park! We are asking students/parents to donate one new item
to their classroom’s basket. With everyone’s generosity, we
hope to have the baskets loaded to capacity with wonderful items! Below
is a list of the classroom themes. Since we need some time to put the
baskets together, all donations need to be in by Thursday, April 1st.
